2018 Fall Sports Preview More than 75 ESF students participate in fall intercollegiate sports 8/21/2018SHARE:
The 2018 Mighty Oaks falls sport season is underway as student-athletes arrive on campus for preseason practice.
The men's and women's soccer programs will see the biggest change this season as long-time Head Coach Dan Ramin stepped down last spring to focus on his role as ESF director of athletics. Taking on Ramin's responsibilities is Adam Scalisi, a former Mighty Oaks soccer player and assistant coach the past two seasons. Joining Scalisi on the sidelines as assistant coaches this season are former women's soccer standout Heather Carl and Eric Bonnier.
The men's squad welcomes back several players from last year's team that qualified for the USCAA National Championship tournament, including senior defender George Beinetti and sophomore goalkeeper Carmine Tronolone. Talented freshman recruits Jake Witte and Owen Henckler are also expected to contribute to the team this season. The season kicks off Aug. 25 vs. Keuka College. The team will face off against Paul Smith's College in the annual Barkeater's Cup Sept. 23 in the Adirondacks and end HVIAC conference play Oct. 21 vs. The College of New Rochelle.
The women's team, which finished last season 13-3 overall and lost in the semifinals at the USCAA National Championship tournament, will have huge holes to fill as most of last year's starting lineup graduated. Stepping up to the task will be junior forward Alyssa Hughes and senior defender Sarah Wohlfahrt. The team also welcomes highly touted recruits Rachael Foote and Grace Sinsebox. The women's team starts its season on the road Aug. 25 vs. Keuka College. They will face cross-town rival Onondaga Community College Sep. 7 in the always-competitive Queen of the Hill Cup. The squad will face conference rival Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Sept. 21 and end the season on the road Oct. 24 against SUNY Plattsburgh.
The men's and women's cross-country teams both finished in second place last season at the USCAA National Championships. Both teams are championship hungry and hope to take home the top prize this season. The women's team welcomes back a USCAA first-team All-American and 2018 SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award winner, senior Marissa Lathrop. Lathrop who holds just about every ESF cross-country and track school record will lead the women's team. Lathrop will be joined by a strong supporting cast including sophomore Cori Conlon who was a regular contributor to the team last spring. The men's team will be led by sophomore Mark McClenahan, who was the fastest freshman runner in school history last season. Joining McClenahan will be freshman Dan Bort, a local product from Tully, New York, and Matt Johnson.
The path to the national championships will not be easy as both teams start the season at the Le Moyne College Invitational. The teams travel to SUNY Geneseo Sept. 29 for the Mike Woods Invite which features dozens of top programs from the Northeast. The USCAA National Championship will be Nov. 9 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
In 2017, the men's golf team had one of the best seasons in program history, finishing in sixth place overall the USCAA National Championships. The team welcomes back talented senior All-American Sean Barron. Also returning to the team are seniors Kory Whittum and Colin Sabitus who both made significant contributions last season. The team's season tees off Sept. 9 at the ESF Players Invitational at the Links at Erie Village. September is a busy month for the team, with travel to Keuka, Utica, Canton and Oswego. The USCAA National Championship will be Oct. 7 at the Penn State Blue Course.
The Woodsmen's season gets underway later in the fall when the team hosts its annual home competition Oct. 20 at the Tully Field Station. The following week, the team travels to the Adirondacks Oct. 27 to face off against rival Paul Smith's College. The fall season ends with a competition Nov. 3 at Finger Lakes Community College.
