On the Land, One-quarter of Vertebrates Die Because of Humans

Humans have a "disproportionate effect" on the other species of vertebrates that share Earth's surface with us, causing more than 25 percent of the deaths among an array of species all over the globe, according to a recently published study. A team of scientists from ESF and the U.S. Department of Agriculture analyzed the deaths of 42,755 animals that were reported in 1,114 published studies. They found that 28 percent of the animals' deaths were directly caused by humans. (2/8)

Mighty Oaks Track Team Heads to Yale

Eight runners from the Mighty Oaks track team will travel to Yale University Feb. 9 to compete in the 15th Annual Giegengack Indoor Invitational. (2/6)

Fulbright Scholar Picks ESF for Study of Genetic Engineering Technique

Patrícia Fernandes-a Fulbright scholar and Ph.D. student-came to ESF from her native Portugal to further her research on the European chestnut tree. Under the guidance of Professor William Powell, director of ESF's American Chestnut Research and Restoration Project, she learned a genetic engineering technique with the potential to help ensure the sustainability of chestnut production in her home country.
