Grading scheme

The majority of your grade will be based on your projects:25% for oral presentations (5% for the Intro and 20% on the Final) and 40% for written reports or other products.The project proposals are 15% and the remaining 20% is for other assignments such as time and effort accounting, feedback for presenters, and preparing for skill sessions if needed.

Late assignments will be discounted at the rate of 10%/day.Assignments required for class participation will be worth 0% after the day we needed them.

Ian:Second year FNRM, law, concentrated animal feeding operations and well water contamination.DEC legal staff.Exposure as an intern, and his family has a well that was contaminated by a project upslope.

Will:Second year FNRM, law, from Ithaca, worked in Boston this summer with a software company.Not sure what project of the 10 he proposed.

Sam:undergrad in FNRM, last semester in MPS, human dimensions, and governance.Create a framework for watershed associations to monitor invasive species spread from recreational boaters.This was related to his summer job at the Finger Lakes Institute, Hobart and William Smith.Probably in the form of a handbook.Need to decide on the scope.(This is different from his 10 ideas before the summer).

Sean:Final year of both law and FNRM programs.Environmental and natural resources law.Home state is Alaska, but better to work with something closer.Internship with DEC, exposed to illegal mining operations in central NY, unknown to the state, and lack of enforcement.Project is to identify these, research the landowners, and provide this information to the DEC or an NGO.DEC doesnít have the resources

Matt:First semester MPS, has been managing a small dairy farm after graduating from Cornell in 2009.Interested in integrated resource management for farms.Bedded pack systems for nutrient capture are common in small scale dairies.He proposes an analysis of carbon sourcing for these systems, using case studies, one in Preble that he knows.

A guide to state and federal laws that prevent individuals from installing solar panels, collecting rainwater and the like.Important to environmentalists and libertarians.Will worked for the Consumer Energy Alliance in DC last semester.How about the Federalist Society?

A historical biological map of Syracuse, like the one for Cayuga Lake.Chamber of Commerce?Onondaga Historical Society.The MOST.The Erie Canal Museum.The illustrations are key to the appeal of the map.

a crowd-sourced app for recreational opportunities.For example, a ton of places to swim in Ithaca.

Annotated bibliographies

The references you cite might not be the ones where you found the information.Choose sources to cite with your audience in mind.

Sometimes itís worth annotating bad sources if it will help you remember why not to use them.


Ian: I reviewed my bibliography, breezed through 20-30 sourced and picked the 10 that seemed most relevant.3-4 sentence synopsis of what the article was about and how I expect to use it.Some of them I pasted in the abstract.One was a critique of published articles

Sean: Highlighted areas he needed to follow up.The earlier list was a lot of media sources, but here he is reading cited cases.There is much more information on lead paint than on lead pipes. Paul Driscoll, Department of Neighborhood and Business Development, Syracuse Land Bank, 2000 houses seized for delinquent taxes.They lost their federal funding for lead abatement about three years ago.The World Health Organization covers everything about water quality.

Will: found how-to materials on web sites etc, not clear what scholarship is relevant to the project.Suggestions:Economic impact of sourcing locally.Research on the experience of the consumer placing orders.History of placing orders, effects of modernization.Data protection and cyber security.Small businesses.Adoption of business plans.

Sam:Background on invasive species, early detection, citizen science in general and with invasive species in particular.Some will be helpful as how-to guides. There will be more than this on aquatic invasive species.Putting the program together will use information that the Finger Lakes Institute already has.It might be GIS-based, ARC provides the framework for the app.

Only concern would be to better detail what work-product is expected at the end of the semester to help students frame their project ideas

Strangely enough, I didnít pick a single one of my 10 ideas, but I suppose they helped point me in the right direction.I would suggest that the ideas are tested as potential proposals immediately, the focus of peer feedback should be a sounding board to see if the ideas are relevant for a project or not. The greatest difficulty is soliciting an actual working relationship with a real client. Maybe fictional clients would be okay for project purposes?

Good way of beginning to narrow things down in terms of final project ideas. But I agree with the earlier comment about detailing work-product more clearly before this is assigned. If students knew better what they could or need to submit, they would have better ideas for what is feasible for their 10 ideas.

More emphasis on identifying clients.5 realistic client ideas, start talking to them.

What about a fictional client?How valuable is a real client?Itís nice if the real product really gets used.There is some experience to be gained from having to negotiate with a client.The client can limit your ideas.Are there other opportunities to write term papers on any topic you choose?

I love talking about myself

My presentation had a technology failure, i.e. computer crashed, but this is a fun and important component of this class, especially because the class is so small

Important for the individual as well as for the class as a whole - it gives everyone an idea of where your head's.

Once again, I ended up selecting outside of my 3 project ideas. I feel as if we could have narrowed it down to three project ideas the same day as we presented the 10 project ideas. Maybe the class could help students whittle ideas down to 3 that are not only interesting but practical for this course

It is helpful to get started researching and I believe it is 100% useful and should be repeated, but Iím sure future students will be in similar positions as Sean, where they need to change their projects mid-way through the semester so I gave it a neutral 3

Research really canít start soon enough, nonetheless, specifying the quantity of resources (i.e. 25) is a bit arbitrary considering some research will be quite expansive and other times restricted to a limited amount of resources. Maybe a discussion of resources should be included as a component of the same presentation of 10 or 3 project ideas

Very helpful only if you have some semblance of what your final project is going to be based on. Can be slightly helpful if you havenít figured out your final project, in that the act of research will inform you whether your idea is solid or not.

For people who write first and then find relevant sources, this is not the most efficient.

I enjoy the idea, but I donít believe it is necessary for the class. I think it is an interest exercise that should be continued, just not particularly useful.

This should have been done week one, or not at all. Perhaps it would be a useful way to perform personal introductions. I feel as though we spent a lot of time talking about Up-Goer presentations, when they entailed a very small component of the course, and were not especially useful in terms of research etc..

Interesting and potentially useful tool, depending on the person. Perhaps could be used as an in-class exercise.

I always like annotated bibliographies, forces more consideration and examination of sources.

The annotated bibliography is really the time to shine, in terms of squaring away the project idea for the semester, nonetheless, once again the requisite number of references may have been a bit a arbitrary

Draft proposal:

I am never a particular fan of submitting drafts for grades. But, of course, this is personal preference. ††††

I think the proposals should be due much earlier in the semester. At this point in my research and structuring of my project it was difficult to separate what will be eventually included in my final policy brief and what was introductory for the proposal. I think the proposal should be due at the end of September.

My draft proposal was hurried and largely incomplete, if we are going to submit drafts proposals for a grade, I would like much more time to work on it, at least 2 more weeks would have been preferred. It probably would have been best, to assign the draft proposal immediately after selecting topics. With a couple extra weeks, I think I still would have been able to catch on that my original proposal wasnít going anywhere and switched topics like I did.

I think there shouldnít be a grade for a draft, and that there should be more time to come up with the first draft and more time in between the draft review and the final proposal.

Referring back to my previous comment, I prefer handing in the final product for review and criticism from individuals.

I felt as though reviews were rather artificial. There wasnít much time to review properly and students can only offer limited commentary and critiques

Parts of this review were good, but I take reviews from the grader much more seriously than from students, thusly making some of the student reviews variably useful.

Final proposals are an essential component of the class. I only wish I hadnít felt the need to switch topics!

Neutral on it. I think it should be used again next year, but I received most insight on the proposal from the previous ones submitted by students, rather than the denser ones reviewed in class.

Good for structure and content guidance.

I would have liked a more concrete framework or other guidance on how to write a proposal. I think that simply looking at precedent proposals from other students and discussing what we like and donít like about them is only a preliminary phase in learning how to write a proposal.

This is our first time writing a proposal.Tailor it more to our needs.

Though this will sound harsh, if individuals arenít able to draft an effective cover letter or resume by the time they are in graduate school I donít think a morning session will help them tremendously.

Only have Dr. Yanai review and critique. I appreciate and agree with the criticisms Sam and Sean provided me, but it is difficult to put 100% into an assignment that I know is going to be re-worked. Perhaps in the future donít alert students that it is a draft, just have the proposal due a certain day, review them and say go back for a week, re-work it, and then handed in a revised final proposal.

Sam:We see Powerpoint presentations all day every day, can we spice it up?

Sean:to make the format more engaging or dynamic.Too often itís all words.

Ian: Presentations that are crisp and clean, a little more simple might be more engaging.And Iíve never explored the range of tools that PowerPoint provides, like having notes during the presentation.

Ruth:I found how to record narration, when I need to tighten timings, but I donít know how to see the total time.

Will:Iíve had to make more PowerPoint presentations this semester than ever.I stumble across features, each time I use it.

Powerpoint, Prezi, Keynote, all the same.An overwhelming number of choices.

Standard aspect ratio is now 16 by 10 (high def), it used to be 4x3 (analog), compatible with projectors and screen sizes.

Contrast.Drop shadow, use where possible.Fonts at least 24 point.40 or 36 for a title.

Gradient in the background is more interesting than flat.

Primary colors

Learn keyboard shortcuts.F5 goes into presentation mode.

Use consistent formats

Transitions:Dissolve, Fade.In slide sorter, Control-A (select all) and apply a transition.

Space bar to advance clides.

Control-D duplicate.Put your first slide last, so you donít accidentally go to anything else at the end.

Chris Nomuraís capstone class spent 5 weeks learning to make 3-minute TV shows on their research.

Safe area:Slide Master to preset things for all the slides.Delete the safe box later.

Use arrow keys for positioning.

Animate text, he manually highlights them; isnít that a built-in option?Maybe ďdimĒ

Three points per slide.

Taking logos from the internet will be low resolution.Look for the tiff image, lots of pixels.The organization wants people to use the right logo, they will have it under ďmediaĒ or ďpress releaseĒ

Smith and Brown


Whatís better about Smith?Less repetitive.

Brown used only five sentences.Shorter can better.

Brown uses unnecessary words.Paragraphs are good. Each paragraph is one idea.

Writing style: Simple sentence structures are easier to understand.

We expect to find the subject and verb near the front of the sentence.

We diagrammed some sentences and corrected some examples of bad sentences.

Sam met briefly with Lisa Cleckner, his main client contact, just because he was at work and she was there.Are you getting enough feedback?No, I need to ask more questions.Next week will be a good time.I need to spend time clarifying my questions.The client needs to have input on important questions identified in the proposal.

Seanís client, Jennifer Powell, had surgery three weeks ago, so itís not easy to meet with her.She expects to be back to work within the month and they will be in touch.

Ian has the same client.They both worked for her last summer.(They had a windowless room with one computer.)Potential pitfalls?I canít find location information.I have a map but not the GIS data.I can get zoned agricultural land and sources of potable water.

Will has narrowed his project down to two parts, the web site and the LLC registration. He has been focusing on the LLC registration.The application will be submitted as part of the project.He will work on the web site over Thanksgiving break.Writing the analysis of the web site might come first.He hopes to test the web site with some clients before finishing it.

Progress Reports

Ian spent 10 hours last week on the programming piece.He couldnít find parallel programs to model his on.Fines have to go to the state, to avoid an incentive for excessive fines.Environmental benefit projects are an alternative to paying fines; the CAFOs would contribute funds to a non-profit entity, which would address future incidents of well contamination.So finding likely non-profits turned out to be a task.


Sam:Conceptualizing the final report, will see his client on Friday.No major legwork.Next two weeks heaving on writing.To get the answers he needs will be easy once he gets the list together of the decisions they need to make.Which products and programs they are ready to make use of.The final product might be a plan, and it would be implemented next year.


Sean got back in contact with Jen, will show her this week what he is working on.Assessing all the actors involved in the cleanup of Onondaga Lake.City, towns, county, federal government, corporations, Onondaga Nation.Environmentalist groups.Mapping stakeholders and who has power.DEC policy doesnít always include groups like that, which is not politically viable.Better to make a policy that includes everything.

Sean is interested in working with Onondaga Nation.Talk to Jack Manno.
