Programs and Activities
Throughout the year, the Office of International Education works with many other offices at ESF to provide fun, educational, and supportive programs for our international students! Some of our annual programs include:
International Student Orientation: OIE organizes a unique orientation each semester (including summer!) to provide information and resources to incoming international students and visiting scholars. Information includes international student non-immigration regulations, benefits and responsibilities; health, safety and health insurance, and general information about ESF, Syracuse, and New York!
International Student Potluck Series: To help our newly arrived students and visiting scholar's transition to the ESF new environment smoothly, OIE in collaboration with Counseling Services, OELO, and the Writing Resource Center offers a 5-7 week extended orientation program during the first several months of the semester. From academic support to counseling services, from ESOL conversation group to new life skills, we organize various workshops and activities to help new international students learn and engage in the ESF community. Best of all is we do it over dinner and eat foods from all over the world!
OIE Field Trips to Anywhere, NY: Every year, OIE organizes at least two field trips for our international students and scholars to get outside of Syracuse, NY and off ESF's campus. While we will go different places each year, some options include: Corning Museum of Glass, Niagara Falls, Taughannock State Park, Sterling Renaissance Fair, Apple Picking at Beak and Skiff, and more!
International Education Week: Outside of orientation, International Education Week (or IEW) is our biggest program of the year! During this weeklong of events, OIE will organize a series of programs to celebrate and promote the benefits of international education and exchange. Programs can range from panel discussions to photo contest to country display to international food tasting! We even have an annual international talent show and are always looking for new ideas to help celebrate!
International Friendsgiving Dinner: Working with Friends of Moon Library, OIE is happy to invite our international students who stay on campus during Thanksgiving break to join ESF staff, faculty, and students for our annual International Friendsgiving Dinner! Modeled after a "traditional" American Thanksgiving dinner, we're happy to share it with you and welcome all international students and scholars at ESF.
Lunar New Year Celebration: Our Lunar New Year celebration is another large event we have annually at ESF. Hosted by OIE and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, during our Lunar New Year celebration, we learn how to make Chinese dumplings, eat traditional Chinese New Year dishes, learn Chinese crafts, and listen to Chinese music and songs. U.S. students and international students alike come together to celebrate the festival and traditional holidays.
Inclusive Excellence Graduation Ceremony: Every year in May, OIE works to co-host an Inclusive Excellence Graduation Ceremony to honor and celebrate the achievement of our international and other underrepresented students from ESF. The ceremony highlights the special accomplishment and hard work by our students and all of the graduating students receive a special honor cord. Family and friends are welcome to join as well!
International Leadership Retreat: Come join our international student leaders as they learn more about their leadership skills and how they can be better advocates for international at ESF – all while being surrounded by forests and lakes in the Adirondacks! A full weekend of fun and growth, OIE is proud to offer this opportunity to our growing student leaders.
English Conversation Group: In addition to our social events, ESF also hosts an informal discussion group to talk about cultural, societal, and other topics to help our students improve their conversational English language skills. This group is run through the ESF Writing Resource Center. For more information, don't hesitate to reach out to Esohe Egiebor.
International Student Club: In addition to OIE, don't forget about our International Student Club where students help students. More information to come, but for questions, don't hesitate to reach out to Hui Chen.
