ENGINEERING
Spatial Information Science and Engineering (GIScE)is a newer field in the engineering family. This high tech and high demand field involves spatial information acquisition, analysis, modeling, and applications.
A crucial component of Spatial Engineering is the use of geographic information systems (GIS). SUNY ESF prepares geospatial engineers to utlize GIS and other developing technologies such as GPS, satellite imagery, laser mapping and fast computing to create complex layers of interconnected geographic information. Data gathered by geospatial engineers has uses in so many different fields including surveying, civil engineering, climate change, forestry, biology and more. Geospatial Engineering constantly reveals new insights about our planet and our place in it.
Featured Geospatial Research at ESF
Space Balloon Project
A package that was launched from the ESF campus and lifted a pair of cameras over 110,000 feet above Earth was recovered over 30 miles away from campus, providing graduate students with stunning photographs and a lesson in remote sensing.
New York View
NewYorkView, headquartered at ESF, is one of several "StateView" members of AmericaView, a nationwide program (a consortium of state-based consortia) that focuses on satellite remote sensing data and geospatial technologies in support of applied research, K-16 education, workforce development, and technology transfer.
