The Global Space Balloon Challenge
We are a group of students at the SUNY-ESF, and we share a common interest in geospatial technology. Nowadays, anyone can simply log on to the internet and download high quality photos of the Earth’s surface. Our group, however, wants to do more. We want to push the limits of modern technology and design our own vessel to travel into the atmosphere.
Then we thought – why stop there? Why constrain ourselves to taking just photos when we know that we are capable of so much more. Ideas started to flow: let’s test air quality, let’s measure temperature, let’s take photos at night, etc. The possibilities are endless and, quite literally, the sky is the limit.
We’re not alone in our dream. In 2015, we had the pleasure of entering the Global Space Balloon Challenge (GSBC), an international competition that spans across 42 countries www.balloonchallenge.org. We had an amazing opportunity here to interact with over 160 other teams and really put ESF on the map.
While a project such as this may appear somewhat modest in nature, innovative space technologies and groundbreaking aerial science experiments can be costly endeavors. If you have an interest in helping us to achieve our goal, simply let us know and we will be forever grateful.
We are a team of dedicated scientists and engineers, and we have a vision. With a little bit of hardware, a lot of work, and just a sprinkle of luck, ESF can truly go to space.
