Project #1: Park Master Plans

Directions: Go to the following website for Oregon State Parks and Recreation:

http://www.prd.state.or.us/masterplans.php

Choose one of the completed plans listed on the page (NOTE: do not choose the Curry County, Wallowa County, or Washington County plans). Write a 2-to-3-page report answering the following questions about the master plan that you choose. Keep in mind that this assignment is designed to make you think both about what the master plan includes as well as what it does not. If you cant find an answer to one of the questions below in the plan, state this and explain why the omission of this subject from the plan may or may not be a problem for the future of the park.

  1. Provide the name and location of the park chosen.

  1. Identify the specific reasons why the master plan was created. For example, is the master planning process simply required by the park agency or are there specific concerns for the site that needed to be addressed?

  1. a. What are two of the major recreational facilities found in the park? Consider facilities such as picnic areas, campgrounds, visitor centers, boat launches or marinas, beaches, etc

b. Have these facilities had any problems with overuse by visitors, erosion, vegetation loss, or other negative impacts? If so, what?

c. What are the plan recommendations for improving these facilities (if any)?

  1. a. Identify one of the major resources or attractions in the park. Examples of some resources or attractions are water bodies, wetlands, woodlands, historic sites, etc

b. What concerns or issues related to this attraction are included in the plan? For example, if the site is a historic site, does the potential for ruin of historic artifacts exist?

c. What recommendations does the plan include regarding this resource or attraction?

  1. a. What visitors currently use the park? List one visitor group. What facilities does this group use?

b. Are there any existing conflicts between this user group and other visitor groups? How does the plan suggest dealing with these conflicts in the future?
