Planet Forward Salon - Women and Girls: Nourishing the Planet in the Face of Climate Change
Wednesday, November 5, 2014
8:30 am - 10:30 am
Location: Nifkin (Alumni) Lounge
Event Description: Join members of the new Planet Forward group in Nifkin Lounge to watch a "salon" on the topic of Women and Girls: Nourishing the Planet in the Face of Climate Change. The salon is part of Planet Forward's yearlong focus on "Feeding the Planet".
Planet Forward engages young people and innovators in search of solutions to the biggest challenges facing our planet. Produced by the Center for Innovative Media at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs, Planet Forward uses web, video, social media, television and events to empower new voices, elevate compelling ideas and lead a global conversation on the planet's future. ESF is a member of the Planet Forward Consortium, which includes colleges, universities and partners (like National Geographic).
About this month's salon...
Women comprise a majority of the agricultural labor force in developing countries, yet they lack equal access to resources, land, technology, mobility and decisionmaking. Dependent on natural resources that are adversely affected by extreme weather and environmental degradation, women face special vulnerabilities in
agriculture and food security.
This salon will identify how women are disproportionately affected by climate change and will investigate policies, practices and tools that improve access and education, address social and economic barriers, and empower women and girls.
● How does climate change and weather volatility affect women disproportionately in developing countries?
● What are some of the adaptation and mitigation technologies that most improve the lives of women and the poor?
● How can we empower and invest in women and girls to create opportunities that improve livelihoods and buffer the impact of climate change?
● How can we better communicate these challenges and opportunities with government, private sector and the public?
About the series and Planet Forward...
Feeding The Planet
Feeding The Planet launched in 2013 to highlight challenges and solutions in areas of food and nutrition security. Through media, discussions, and events, the initiative helps identify the biggest challenges to feeding 9 billion people by 2050 and introduces innovators to highlevel influentials.
The Planet Forward Salon Series connects thoughtleaders, researchers, innovators and students in a focused conversation on solutions and innovations. Moderated by Planet Forward host and creator Frank Sesno, approximately 30 participants consider and discuss best practices to address food security, water, energy and climate issues. Content and ideas from the planetforward.org community are shared and considered during salons.
