Location: Baker 432

Event Description: Ecosystem Restoration Design
EFB 434 / EFB 634 (4 credits), Fall 2017
Now in its 8th year!

...a course taught both in MEXICO
and the U.S.
by Stew Diemont, Deb Diemont, and Tomek Falkowski

Begin Fall 2017 semester a wee bit early – spending 11 days in Mexico! We will be traveling throughout Chiapas, Mexico, where we will study degraded, restored, and pristine rain forest, streams, wetlands, cloud forest…visit Mayan villages and climb Mayan temples…meet with Latin American restoration experts and indigenous groups who have restored ecosystems for centuries. You’ll get back on campus before the semester begins. This trip will inform restoration designs that will be part of the class as it continues through the Fall semester.

Satisfies the field requirement for EFB students. Open to ALL ESF and SU students.
Mexico Trip:
11 days
August 15 - 25, 2017

We’ll be staying in hostels and traveling on public transportation to keep costs low!

...and continuing through Fall semester:
Wednesdays
5:15 - 7:15 p.m.

During the semester (when we get back from Mexico), we will continue to explore the state of the science and engineering of ecosystem restoration. We will examine prairie, forest, wetland, stream, lake, coral reef, and urban ecosystems, among others. We will consider how stakeholders should be incorporated into restoring ecosystems, and how culture and government can help in developing a framework for sustainable ecosystem restoration projects.
