Dr. Charles Cogbill - “Composition and Structure of the Presettlement Forests of New York and New England”
Dr. Charles Cogbill, a historical ecologist and Associate of Harvard Forest, lives in Plainfield, Vt. He is actively engaged in archival research on the history of the forests of the Northeast and in field studies on the dynamics and structure of the vegetation of eastern North America. His talk on the “Composition and Structure of the Presettlement Forests of New York and New England” will delve into the theory, field studies of old-growth, and surveyor data to reconstruct the forests before European settlement. This research is drawing an empirical the map of original vegetation of the region and is documenting the nature of the “tension zone” between northern and southern forest types in the East.
