HOW DO I GET ASSISTANCE?
You are encouraged to ask for assistance from the librarians at the reference desk adjacent to the library catalogs. Reference hours are Monday -Thursday 9:00 AM-9:00 PM, and Friday 9 AM-4 PM. The student worker at the circulation desk is not trained to answer reference questions.
- The library faculty have also prepared a number of printed guides which may help you with your library work. Look for these.
- ESF 200, Information Literacy, is offered every semester.
- The librarians are Elizabeth Elkins, Jo Anne Ellis, Jane Verostek, and James Williamson.
- If you have a circulation or reserve question see Bonnie Charity, in 104 Moon (470-6726).
HOW DO I BORROW LIBRARY MATERIAL?
- Material charged on the automated circulation system requires your college ID.
- Books and theses may be charged out for the semester, subject to a recall after three weeks if needed by another patron.
- Books on permanent reserve in the reference area and bibliographic center do not circulate.
- Current periodicals do not circulate; bound periodicals circulate overnight.
- See our Borrowing Policies for more information.
HOW DO I RENEW BOOKS ONLINE?
- You may renew books online through the SUMMIT system by going to the Patron Info page and logging on.
- Once logged on you will be shown a list of what is currently checked out to you. You may select which titles you wish to renew from this list.
HOW DO I GET RESERVE MATERIAL?
Books and articles placed on reserve for classes are shelved at the circulation desk. Your ID will be held at the circulation desk while you use this material for a 2 hour loan period.
WHY CAN"T I FIND THIS BOOK ON THE SHELF?
Check a number of possibilities:
- Be sure you have copied the call number correctly, noted a location symbol if there is one (i.e., periodicals, archives), and checked the status (i.e., checked out).
- Books that are checked out to another patron may be recalled for you. Ask for a recall request form at the circulation desk or fill out a recall request electronically from Moon Library's website.
- If it is not signed out and appears to be "unexplainably off the shelf", fill out a search request card, being sure to include your name and address. A thorough search will be made for your request and you will be notified.
- Ask a librarian for help.
I NEED MATERIALS THAT ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN MOON HOW CAN I GET THEM?
ESF students have full borrowing privileges at SU libraries, including these science libraries: Science & Technology Library (first floor Carnegie Building, east entrance), Geology Library (300 Heroy Geology Laboratory), Mathematics Library (208 Physics Building). Also available to ESF students are the Law Library in White Hall and the Architecture Reading Room in Slocum Hall.
As a SUNY student you are granted library privileges at any SUNY institution, including the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse, upon presentation of your ID.
Through Interlibrary Loan (ILL), ESF faculty, staff and students may borrow research materials which are not available here or at the libraries of Syracuse. James Williamson coordinates ILL (Room 103B). You may also request interlibrary loans by using our interloan server, Illiad.
WHICH MATERIAL IS IN ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL?
The Archives include faculty publications and college history. The Special Collection includes rare and unusual material. Hours are posted on the door or a reference librarian may help you. Flora Nyland is the library archivist (Room 15).
WHAT HAPPENS BEHIND THE SCENES IN THE LIBRARY?
The Technical Services area, Room 9, is responsible for obtaining library materials, organizing them and preparing them for your use. Recommendations for book orders should be sent to Betsy Elkins, or use our Acquisition Form. The librarian in this area is Jo Anne Ellis.
MAY I EAT AND DRINK IN MOON LIBRARY?
Yes, but food and drink may be dangerous to the health of library material. Please respect our collection and our new furniture by being very careful eating in the Lbrary. Beverages in Library approved containers that are spill proof are allowed.
