Syracuse Campus (The Hill)
SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry (SUNY-ESF) shares campus and resources with Syracuse University (SU) and SUNY Upstate Medical University which together form an academic community of over 25,000.  SUNY-ESF represents one of the largest groupings of faculty (over 100) and graduate students (about 600) in the U.S. dedicated to environmental and ecological research (with about 20 graduate students working on plant ecology related topics). The following links provide a good introduction to the campus:

The City of Syracuse & Surroundings
Syracuse is a medium-sized city that combines various cultural offerings and urban trappings with easy access to its natural surroundings. Campus is a short bus ride or ~25 minute walk away from downtown, and a number of parks within and just outside the city limits afford good opportunities for recreational activities such as hiking, biking, swimming, and skiing. The links below provide a good introduction to the city:
Upstate New York
The broader region around Syracuse provides great natural settings for ecological research as well as wonderful opportunities for weekend getaways to some truly spectacular spots and tranquil retreats – the Adirondacks, Catskills, Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario, Thousand Islands archipelago on the St. Lawrence River, and Niagara Falls. In addition, Toronto, Montreal, New York City, Philadelpia, and Boston provide great urban destinations for weekend trips as well.
