Areas of Interest

  • My research thus far has focused on infectious diseases in fishes of commercial, ecological, and veterinary importance.
  • I employ the tools of molecular systematics to delineate species and strains of pathogens.
  • These data are used to evaluate the evolutionary history of pathogenic organisms.
  • From an applied perspective, we can improve animal health by understanding the distribution and diversity of important disease causing organisms.

Prospective Students

From time to time there I will be seeking students for specific projects. However, I'm generally looking for self motivated individuals interested in fish and wildlife diseases, parasitology, microbiology, or molecular systematics.

Undergraduate Position: Survey of yellow perch parasites. Knowledge of fish anatomy, basic dissection skills a must. Contact Dr. Whipps for details.

Graduate Student Positions: Currently seeking a student to draft and implement a hatchery fish health plan, conduct fish health surveys, test efficacy of disinfectants, and carry out challenge experiments with key pathogens. Support available through competative departmental teaching assistantships.
