NYC Students Learn Hands-on Science — Literally

group of high school students from New York City spent a week at ESF this summer, immersing themselves in hands-on science as they learned about environmental engineering, fisheries science, ecology, dendrology and GIS mapping. In some cases, the "hands-on" aspect of the program was more literal than the students had expected.

Dr. Robin Kimmerer Kicks Off Cornell Plantations Lecture Series

Cornell Plantations kicks-off its Annual Fall Lecture Series, Wednesday, Sept. 2, with a lecture by the renowned botanist, professor and award-wining author of "Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants," Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer of ESF. The Harder Lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. in Call Alumni Auditorium in Kennedy Hall and will be followed by a complimentary garden party in the botanical garden of Cornell Plantations.

Early Work Experience Helps Graduate Jump-start Career

By the time Andrew "AJ" Murphy started his first job shortly after graduating from ESF's paper engineering program in December 2014, he had already worked six months in a co-op job setting, completed an internship and spent a summer working in a laboratory through the prestigious Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Three months after graduating from the paper engineering program at ESF, Rachel Klein considers herself one of the luckier people around when she heads out to work in the morning in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

New York City Students Focus on Science with ESF

Hands-on field science will be the focus next week for 20 New York City high school students who travel to ESF to study ecology in urban environments. The students are affiliated with the New York City-based non-profit organization Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) Scholars; ESF has partnered with SEO in an effort to interest more under-represented students in environmental science and related fields.
