New Frog Species Identified along East Coast

Researchers have identified a new species of leopard frog living in largely urban areas in the Interstate 95 corridor from the metropolitan tri-state area as far south as North Carolina. A scientist from the New York Natural Heritage Program, which is administered through ESF, contributed to a report Oct. 29 in the journal "PLOS ONE" that the new species has been named the Atlantic Coast leopard frog.

Giant Tortoises Gain a Foothold on a Galapagos Island

A population of endangered giant tortoises, which once dwindled to just over a dozen, has recovered on the Galapagos island of Española, a finding described as "a true story of success and hope in conservation" by the ESF professor who is the lead author of a study published today (Oct. 28).

Women's Team Earns #2 Seed for USCAA Soccer National Championship

The ESF women's soccer team will travel to Charleston, W. Va., as the #2-seeded team in the 2014 USCAA Soccer National Championship.

ESF Honored for Commitment to Blood Drives

Community involvement is alive and well at ESF. According to a National Assessment of Service and Community Engagement survey conducted in the spring of 2014, about 76 percent of ESF's undergraduate population volunteers in some way. "That says a lot about our students," said Meagan Pepper, ESF's program coordinator for community service.

Bioenergy Day Highlights Benefits of Heating with Wood

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry joined the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the New York Biomass Energy Alliance Oct. 22 in celebrating National Bioenergy Day with activities to educate the public about cleaner, more efficient ways to heat with wood and the value of sustainable forestry.

Woodsmen Host East Coast Lumberjack Roundup

The ESF Woodmen's team hosted the 10th Annual East Coast Lumberjack Roundup in Tully, N.Y., Oct. 11.

SUNY Manufacturing Funding Benefits ESF Work

The State University of New York recently announced $710,000 was awarded for the first round of funding from the SUNY Materials and Advanced Manufacturing Network of Excellence, which aims to support the state's manufacturing sector by bringing faculty and student researchers together with industry experts to spur the development and commercialization of their work. Nine collaborative projects on seven SUNY campuses received funding. Six of the nine collaborative projects to receive funding from SUNY involved students and faculty from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF).
