  • M.S., University of Maine, 2000
  • Ph.D., University of Maine, 2004

Links

  • Space Balloon Project
A package that was launched from the ESF campus and lifted a pair of cameras some 17 miles above Earth was recovered in Poughkeepsie, providing a group of students with stunning photographs and a lesson in remote sensing.

Research Interests

  • environmental monitoring using remote sensing methods (e.g. impervious surface/vegetation structure using satellite image analysis, uncertainty analysis, context-based image classifiers),
  • environmental modeling using geographic methods (e.g. climate pattern analysis, national forest consolidation dynamics, biodiversity responses to climate/land cover changes, urban growth prediction), and
  • environmental decision systems (e.g. optimal placement of wildlife mitigation structures).

Research stats: 25 journal manuscripts, h-index = 10 (Google Scholar), $1.4M as lead PI from NASA, NSF, USDA Forest Service, USAID and Syracuse Center of Excellence.

"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us _universe_, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." -Albert Einstein

I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding of a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me. Personal Statement
I grew up in the Syracuse Area and completed my undergraduate studies at SUNY ESF. After being exposed to the unprecedented environmental challenges facing this generation, I soon realized the need for a global transition to renewable sources of energy. Im mainly interested in quantifying urban energy flows and applying ecological principals to human networks.

Graduate Research Topic
Effects of land use/land change on residential energy demand
