COURSE DESCRIPTION

FOR 690. Seminar and Workshop on Natural Resources Policy and Management (3)

Six hours of discussion, seminar and group project laboratory work per week. Individual and team projects on policy and management to demonstrate the integration of principles and concepts. Oral and written presentations required.

Text:  Meffe, Gary K.; Nielsen, L. A.; Knight, R. L.; and Schenborn, D. A.  2002. Ecosystem Management: Adaptive, Community-Based Conservation. Island Press; Washington, D.C.  313 p.

Other resources will be identified by the instructor and the students in accordance with projects to be selected based on our collective interests and expertise.

Grading:

In-class contributions, e.g. discussion questions based on the readings (20%).
Exams (40%) (mid-term exam 15%, final exam 25%)
Projects (40%) (oral presentation 15%, written report 20%)

Late assignments will be discounted at the rate of 10%/day.  Assignments required for class participation will be worth 0% after the day we needed them!

Schedule:

The following schedule allows for project planning in about 1/3 of the sessions for the first half of the course, while 2/3 of the classes will be devoted to chapters in Meffe et alia's textbook (Ecosystem Management: Adaptive, Community-Based Conservation).  The latter part of the course will be organized around individual and group projects.  We will revisit and revise the schedule as needed throughout the semester.
