Dr. Makkonen's general research interests include the refinement of fibers for papermaking: (non-sulfur chemical pulping, mechanical pulping, pulp bleaching, fiber fractionation, deinking, hemicelluloses, fiber measurements, refining); and measurements to monitor fiber and paper behavior in the processes including paper-property-variation based paper machine diagnostics.
