Thermo Scientific Exactive High Field Orbitrap LCMS system with a Vanquish HPLC and EQUAN autosampler.

Analytical Chemistry

SUNY ESF operates a state-of-the-science analytical chemistry facility with laboratories dedicated to PFAS analysis. Our staff includes full-time chemists with expertise developing and applying analytical methods to measure PFAS in complex matrices, and experience conducting PFAS research to support a wide range of applications to site investigation and remediation.

PFAS Laboratory and Equipment

SUNY ESF invested $3M to fully equip the Center for Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CCEC) core facility to analyze PFAS in water, wastewater, soil, sediment, biota tissue, and air. The centerpiece of the dedicated PFAS laboratory is the Thermo Scientific Mass Spectrometer (MS) facility that includes two ultra-high sensitivity TSQ Altis Triple Quad LC-MS/MS systems. The flagship of the MS core is an ultra-high sensitivity / high resolution, accurate mass (HRAM) Exactive HF Orbitrap LCMS system. LC-HRAM-MS quantifies PFAS with greater confidence, selectivity and sensitivity in difficult matrixes. These instruments can detect low femtogram concentrations of organic compounds, including PFAS. All instruments are equipped with a Teflon-free Vanquish UPHLC chromatographic systems that are specifically designed for high-throughput PFAS analysis. In addition, the CCEC core facility includes two new sample preparation laboratories fully equipped with superspeed centrifuges, SpeedVac, Millipore PFAS free water purification systems, sonicators, freeze dryers, freezers (-20°C and -80°C), laboratory spaces temperature controlled to +/-1°C, and secure entry by special Fob readers.
