Scholarships

As a top priority for ESF, scholarships provide stability for the College's financial aid program to help attract and retain the best students. Establishing a scholarship or adding to an existing one, is an easy way to make a difference in the lives of countless young people for generations to come.

Types of Scholarships

Endowed Scholarships
  • Require a minimum gift of $25,000
    • Restrictions on use of gift can be made on gifts of $50,000 and above.
  • Can be named by the donor
  • Permanently invests the donor's gift
  • Use a portion of the income earned each year to make an award
  • Literally last forever as the principal of the gift is never spent
  • Can be added to at any time
Expendable Scholarships
  • Require a minimum gift of $1000
  • Can be named by the donor
  • The entire gift can be spent for the purposes designated
  • Can be renewed annually with additional gifts
College Memorial Scholarship
  • An existing endowed fund used for scholarships
  • Receives memorial gifts when individual funds are not established
  • Family members are notified of donations received to this fund in memory of their loved ones
Existing Named Scholarships
  • Listed in Named Scholarship & Academic Support Funds section
  • Can be added to at any time by anyone
  • Donors will be notified of additional contributions made to their scholarships
Establishing a Scholarship
  • Chose endowed or expendable scholarship and make a gift at the appropriate level
  • Select a name for the scholarship
    • Can be named for the donor or in honor of someone
      • The John and Jane Doe Scholarship
      • The John P. Doe Memorial Scholarship
    • Can be named in honor of groups or events
      • The Class of 1951 Scholarship
      • The Smith Company Centennial Scholarship
  • Select criteria for awarding the scholarship
    Examples
    • Academic Merit (grade point average or high school ranking)
    • Financial Need (as determined by federal standards)
    • Class Level (undergraduate or graduate)
    • Academic Major
Scholarship Recipient Selection
  • Usually selected by the ESF Financial Aid office in consultation with the appropriate Faculty Chair
  • Most scholarships are annually renewable to students who maintain good academic standing
Scholarship Donor Notification
  • Donors are annually notified with information about their scholarship recipients
  • Scholarship Donors are invited to an annual reception with student recipients

Academic Program Support

Gifts to support academic equipment, special lectures, faculty professional development, and enhanced instruction are critical to the mission of ESF.

Types of Academic Program Support

Faculty Funds
  • One fund currently established for each Faculty
  • Used at the discretion of the Faculty Chair for greatest needs
  • Can be added to at any time by anyone
Endowed Faculty Funds
  • Require a minimum gift of $25,000
  • A portion of the investment income is used at the discretion of the Faculty Chair per the wishes of the donor
  • Can be named at the discretion of the donor

Endowed Lectureship

  • Requires a minimum gift of $25,000
  • A portion of the investment income is used to fund a lecture series or guest instructor
  • Can be named at the discretion of the donor
Endowed Professorship
  • Requires a minimum gift of $500,000
  • A portion of the investment income is used as an award to a faculty member to pursue research or instruction interests
  • Can be named at the discretion of the donor
Endowed Chair
  • Requires a minimum gift of $1,000,000
  • A portion of the investment income is used to fund a faculty position
  • Can be named at the discretion of the donor
Equipment Funds
  • Gifts for equipment can be made through Faculty Funds or as established endowments
  • Special equipment funds exist for the Jahn Laboratory, Baker Laboratory and The Ranger School.
  • Potential gifts of used or surplus equipment will be evaluated on an individual basis, contact gifts@esf.edu for more information
