Chemistry Department Seminar Series: Dr. Joseph HouckCampus Calendar
Thursday, November 8, 2018
11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location: 148 Baker Laboratory
Dr. Joseph Houck, Penn State, will present his seminar: Create Chemistry: Spark Student Engagement with Digital Tools. Abstract:
Interacting and connecting with students at a distance can be challenging. Creating the right online space and choosing appropriate resources can break down the barriers to engagement. From delivering content in ELMS:LN and using lightboard videos, to embedding interactive H5P elements and hosting synchronous problem solving sessions in Zoom, this presentation will describe a variety of technologies used to engage students in an online general chemistry course. In the laboratory course, hands-on experiments are conducted using at-home laboratory kits in conjunction with an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN). Best practices and student feedback on these digital tools will be shared. The presentation will conclude with a discussion on how instructors can implement these tools in their own online or residential classroom.
