Unsung heroes are the people who do good behind the scenes, and the Martin Luther King Jr. 2005 Celebration Committee and the Syracuse Region Martin Luther King Jr. Commission are asking for your help in honoring these people.

The 2005 Unsung Heroes Awards will be presented at Syracuse University?s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Dinner Jan. 23 in the Carrier Dome.

Awards will be presented to one youth and one adult from the greater Syracuse community, one SU faculty or staff member and one SU student.

Nominees should exemplify the spirit, life and teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. but not be widely recognized for their efforts.

The deadline for nominations is Dec. 20.

"As the name implies, we look for people whose work, while fundamentally important, may go unnoticed outside of the individual?s family, co-workers or local community," James Heffernan, vice president of student affairs at the State University College of Environmental Science and Forestry and chair of the awards committee, said in a statement about the awards.

Nomination forms can be obtained by going online to http://hendricks.syr.edu/ events/nomform05.doc or by calling Hendricks Chapel at 443-2901.

Send completed forms to Hendricks Chapel, Syracuse University, Syracuse 13244-1110.
