(Syracuse)Daniel T. Fitts (ESF '81) and Stephen F. Sloan (ESF '67 and '69) were elected chair and vice chair, respectively, of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Board of Trustees during the board's annual meeting February 4, 2005. It is the first time the ESF Board has been led by two alumni.
Fitts is the executive director of the Adirondack Park Agency, and he was first appointed to the nine-member ESF Board of Trustees by Gov. George Pataki in 1998. He was elected vice chair in 2001, re-elected to that post in 2003 and succeeds Thomas C. Burkly as chair. SUNY-ESF President Cornelius B. Murphy, Jr., said, "We at ESF have been very fortunate to have had the leadership of Tom Burkly as the chair of our board of trustees over the last four years. We look forward to the contributions of Dan Fitts as we look ahead to the future."
Fitts resides in Lake Placid with his wife Debbie. They have three children: Ricky, Laurel, and Jessica.
Sloan, who holds a Ph.D. from ESF, served for 17 years as the secretary of the state senate where he was responsible for the Senate's business affairs, and served as a senior advisor to the senate majority leadership. He retired from the position in 1997. He was appointed to the ESF Board of Trustees in 2000. Sloan resides in West Fulton, NY, with his wife MiMi.
ESF is the only college in the SUNY system with its own board of trustees as established by statute in 1911 and continued when ESF was incorporated into the state university system.
