ESF’s President Mahoney Named a Top Woman Leader in New York State

Joanie Mahoney, president of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), was named one of the Top Women Leaders in New York State for 2021 by Women We Admire.

The annual list recognizes women for their achievements within their professions, where they are consistently breaking barriers into new and innovative territories.

"I'm honored to be included among these strong women leaders," said Mahoney. "Women continue to break barriers in science, business, and education and it's my hope that we are only beginning. It will be exciting to watch future generations of women leaders go even further."

Mahoney is the first woman to lead ESF. She joined the college in 2018 as chief operating officer and was named president in 2020.

Mahoney previously served as Onondaga County Executive for 11 years, overseeing a county government that served 460,000 residents. During her tenure, she earned national recognition for her environmental stewardship. Before serving as an elected official, Mahoney worked as an attorney both in private practice and as a prosecutor in the Onondaga County District Attorney's Office. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University's School of Management and her Juris Doctor from S.U.'s College of Law.
