Department of Chemistry

Ph.D., 1967, University of Leuven (Belgium); Postdoctoral Associate, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, 1969.

Paul Caluwe is interested in research areas where polymer chemistry and organic chemistry interact strongly, such as the synthesis of specialty polymers: materials that contain needed structure features at intervals along their polymeric backbone in order to achieve desirable physical properties.

He is applying this e.g., to the development of new and environmentally friendly crosslinking agents for cellulosic materials. Such treatments lead to greatly improved physical properties, and may lead to new uses for these renewable resources. He is also interested in computational chemistry and software development, in particular the database management of organic structural formulas. He has written TOXIX: a relational, pictorial database which provides toxic information for nearly three thousand chemical substances.

Prospective students are strongly encouraged to contact members of the faculty directly.
