Waste Audits

Sifting through trash, recycling, and compost has been a long-standing favorite activity at ESF!

These “audits” are open to the campus community and the data that is gathered is invaluable to the Office of Sustainability. It helps us to tailor our zero-waste educational messaging to campus and improve zero-waste infrastructure (such as bin signage).

Composting at Centennial Hall

EcoReps — paid student educators who live in Centennial Hall — began conducting audits of the residence hall’s trash, recycling, and compost in Spring 2022. They found that 30% of the trash’s weight was material that should have been composted! This sparked an educational campaign and discussion about how to make composting easier for students living in the dorm. CenTen began piloting in-room compost bins in Spring 2023.

Audit Results are In!

The Office of Sustainability partners with Oakie’s Green Team to conduct multiple audits each semester. These audits are open to faculty, students, and staff.

How did we do? Check out the results here.

External organizations interested in conducting an audit of their own are encouraged to contact the Office of Sustainability for assistance. We can provide step-by-step guidance, training, and safety instructions.
