ESF Lists Earth Week Activities


SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Folk rock artist and humorist Dana Lyons will perform at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) next week as part of the college's Earth Week activities.

Lyons, whose most widely known song is the comedic "Cows with Guns," is known for his amusing commentary on contemporary life. He lives in a tree house in Washington state.

He will perform at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in Alumni Lounge, Marshall Hall, on the ESF campus.

Earth Week at ESF also includes presentations on population growth, reasons to celebrate the Great Lakes, and nuclear power.

Monday, April 24

10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Red Cross Blood Drive Alumni Lounge, Marshall Hall

7 p.m. Albert Alan Bartlett, an internationally known speaker on the topic of population growth, presents "Overpopulation: The Malthusian Theory." Bartlett, a faculty member at the University of Colorado, will discuss the basics of exponential growth and its effect on the human population. Marshall Hall Auditorium

Tuesday, April 25

2:30 p.m. Michael Connerton of the Great Lakes Research Consortium presents "Reasons for Celebrating the Great Lakes on Earth Day." 11 Illick Hall

4 - 5 p.m. "Ozone Guy" James Cimino of the New York Public Interest Research Group discusses the greenhouse effect and what we can do about it. 111 Marshall Hall

5:30 - 7 p.m. "Perspectives on the Environment" Potluck and storytelling with guests Robin Kimmerer of ESF's Faculty of Environmental and Forest Biology; Irving Powless of the Onondaga Nation; and Francis Parks, director of Students Offering Service at Syracuse University. Some food will be provided but those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass. Alumni Lounge

Wednesday, April 26

noon - 3:30 p.m. (or until the food runs out) Earth Week Picnic Soda, vegan burgers, hamburgers, and hot dogs will be available. Donations to The Nature Conservancy are appreciated. Moon Library patio

12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Presentations by faculty members Robin Kimmerer and Myrna Hall. Moon Library Conference Room
