Non-ESF Sources of Funding
American Wildlife Conservation Foundation Inc.
The American Wildlife Conservation Foundation’s mission is to enhance fish and wildlife resources, with an emphasis on North America, through funding research, education and conservation initiatives with the goal of ensuring that the present and future generations can continue to enjoy these resources. Small awards up to $2,000 intended for supplies or travel are given each year. Proposals are due by February 1 (proposing summer work) or August 1 (proposing work for next calendar year).
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program
Established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. ESF may nominate up to four individuals. Valerie A. Luzadis, Interim Associate Provost for Instruction and Dean of the Graduate School, is the Campus Representative. Applications, recommendations, and nominations are due to the Goldwater Foundation by the last Friday in January; all materials must be received internally by the second week of January. Students MUST contact Dean Luzadis for consideration.
DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship
The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) has established the DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship ( DOE SCGF) program to support outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the U.S. The Fellowship award provides partial tuition support, an annual stipend for living expenses, and a research stipend for full-time graduate study and thesis/dissertation research at a U.S. academic institution for three years. The DOE Office of Science supports the training of scientists and engineers to prepare them for careers in fields that will make significant contribution in the areas of discovery-driven science and science for national needs in energy, environment, and national security. Edna Bailey Sussman Foundation
The Edna Bailey Sussman Foundation supports summer internships for students matriculated in graduate degree programs at ESF. Valerie A. Luzadis, Interim Associate Provost for Instruction and Dean of the Graduate School, is the Campus Representative. Students MUST contact Dean Luzadis for consideration. There is an information meeting in mid-January if one is interested in applying; please check your e-mail for a specific date and time!
EPA Star Fellowships
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is offering Graduate Fellowships for masters and doctoral level students in environmental fields of study. Master's level students may receive support for a maximum of two years. Doctoral students may be supported for a maximum of three years, usable over a period of four years. Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships
Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships are designed to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university departments by increasing ethnic diversity. See the website for complete eligibility information and web-based application materials.
Fulbright – U.S. Graduate Students
A U.S. Student Fulbright Grant allows for individually designed study/research or an English Teaching Assistantship. You can propose a project and/or study plan that will take place during one academic year in a country outside the U.S. Provides support for study/research/teaching in a single country (For exceptions, see World Region Summaries. Eligibility: Recent BA/BS graduates: graduating seniors and recent bachelor’s-degree recipients usually propose projects for which they have had some undergraduate preparation and/or direct work or internship experience; Master's and doctoral candidates: will demonstrate capacity for independent study or research, together with a general knowledge of the history, culture, and current events of the countries to which they are applying; young professionals, including writers, journalists, and those in law, business, and other professional fields: may have up to 5 years of professional study and/or experience in the field in which they are applying. Those with more than 5 years of experience should apply to the Council for International Exchange of Scholars in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Artists and musicians: applicants without a bachelor’s degree may substitute at least four years of professional training or experience. S. Students MUST contact Dean of Graduate School for consideration, with an internal deadline of September 15 for electronic submission of application materials to Dean for local campus committee review.
Garden Club of America
The Garden Club of America strives to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening, to share the advantages of association by means of educational meetings, conferences, correspondence and publications, and to restore, improve, and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement. To further these goals, Zone VI of the Garden Club of America has established a Fellowship in Urban Forestry for qualified U.S. students. In addition, the GCA oversees the Rome Prize for Landscape Architecture, and the Francis Peacock Scholarship for Native Bird Habitat.
IASA Young Scientists Summer Program: Summer Fellowship in Austria for Graduate Students in Natural and Social Sciences, Math, Policy and Engineering
Each summer, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), located in Schloss Laxenburg near Vienna, Austria, hosts a group of graduate students -- primarily doctoral -- from around the world in its Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). These students work closely with IIASA's senior scientists on projects within the Institute's 3 theme areas: energy & technology, natural resources & environment, population & society. Eligibility: advanced graduate student status; field of study compatible with ongoing research at IIASA; research and career would benefit from working alongside 50+ contemporary young scientists from a score or more of other nations, and senior scientists from around the world; interest in the policy implications of the discipline.
NASA Fellowships
Students and faculty may explore and experience unique space and aeronautics content through NASA's education opportunities for higher education in many different categories and grants. National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program
The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in the U.S. and abroad. The NSF welcomes applications from all qualified students and strongly encourages under-represented populations, including women, under-represented racial and ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities, to apply for this fellowship. Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $34,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, a one-time $1,000 international travel allowance and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S., or foreign institution of graduate education they choose.
National Institute of Health Grants and Fellowships

NOAA Seagrant Graduate Fellowships
The National Sea Grant Program sponsors a variety of marine research, outreach and education projects, most through the state Sea Grant Program. Each program announces the availability of funding on an annual or biannual basis. Check the website for more information about specific programs, eligibility, and application deadlines. NSEP David L. Boren Scholarships and NSEP David L. Boren Fellowships
The NSEP David L. Boren Scholarships (undergraduates) provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. NSEP David L. Boren Fellowships (graduates) provide up to $24,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency.
P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund
The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship is awarded annually to women who are citizens of countries other than the U.S. or Canada for graduate study in the U.S. and Canada. The maximum amount for time of study is $10,000. Qualifications: must be matriculated in a graduate program in the U.S. or Canada; at least one full year of coursework must be completed prior to application. Restrictions: U.S. or Canadian citizens are ineligible; scholarships are not awarded for research, internships, or travel; doctoral students who have completed candidacy are not eligible as first-time applicants. The Rocky Mountain Nature Association announces its annual summer fellowship for graduate level researchers in Rocky Mountain National Park.
