Adirondack Program on Science Focuses on Girls, Women
Girls and young women who are interested in science can connect with professional role models and prospective mentors during a daylong Women and Girls in Science program May 7 at the Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb.
The program, offered by the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry's (ESF) Northern Forest Institute, features a mix of outdoor explorations, indoor activities and conversations, and panel discussions.
The day begins at 9 a.m. with a one-hour guided bird walk sponsored by Northern New York Audubon. The formal program begins at 10 a.m. with an introduction followed by a series of concurrent activity sessions. The first panel discussion will be 11 a.m. to noon.
After lunch, a second panel discussion begins at 1 p.m., followed by another group of concurrent activities and walks beginning at 2 p.m.
Activities include a field trip to explore vernal pools, a guided conversation exploring the subject of "Why Philosophers Care What Scientists Think," and learning how International Paper turns pulp to paper and how studying what salamanders eat teaches us about forest health. These are just a sampling of the 10 concurrent sessions.
The two panels, "Pathways to Professions" and "Inspiration and Experiences," will showcase a mix of female student-scientists and professional women in the sciences sharing their perspectives on careers, the importance of mentoring and role models, and the power of early exposure to the natural world. The 60-minute panels will include a Q-and-A session allowing the audience to interact with the panel.
The panels are designed to provide participants with insight from near-peers and role models on the paths panelists have chosen, the preparation required and experiences encountered along the way. The activities are intended to provide participants with more immediate access to the panelists, introducing participants to their work in a stimulating way.
The Women and Girls in Science day is organized by SUNY-ESF's Northern Forest Institute for Conservation Education and Leadership Training (NFI) and held at ESF's Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) in Newcomb.
