SUNY ESF Brings Science Matters to the NYS Fair

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Aug. 19, 2025 –  Science is interactive and fun at the New York State Fair, thanks to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF). From Aug. 20–29, fairgoers can dive into interactive exhibits, meet the scientists and students working to improve our world, and discover why Science Matters.

Find ESF in the State Park at the Fair, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., where you can:

  • Make paper and seed balls
  • Try out chemistry experiments
  • Learn how to live more sustainably
  • Explore forest ecosystems
  • Hear about the comeback of the American chestnut tree
  • Discover hiking spots in ESF forest

"The New York State Fair is a great platform for ESF to bring science out of the lab and into the lives of New Yorkers,” said ESF President Joanie Mahoney. “Our exhibit, in partnership with New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation showcases how environmental research and education can be hands-on, accessible, and inspiring. When people can see, touch, and participate in science, they connect with the natural world and the role they play in protecting it.”

ESF’s experts will also be on hand to answer questions and provide information for interested prospective students and families.

Include ESF in your State Fair Plans:

Wednesday, Aug.  20 – Create handmade paper and learn about the important role chemical engineering plays in solving society's challenges in energy, manufacturing, and the environment.

Thursday, Aug 21 – Hear the latest in restoring the American chestnut tree to the landscape.

Friday, Aug. 22 – Participate in interactive chemistry activities perfect for your school science fair.
