Princeton Review Names ESF One of the Nation’s Best Colleges for 2024

ESF also Ranked No. 2 for Being Green, Named a Best Northeast College

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sept. 20, 2023 – A new report from The Princeton Review names the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) among the country’s Best 389 Colleges for 2024. ESF — one of the nation’s premier colleges focused exclusively on the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies, and building a sustainable future — was also ranked the No. 2 college for being environmentally conscious and among the best colleges in the Northeast.

“It’s exciting to be recognized by The Princeton Review, and we are especially proud of the faculty, staff, and students who work so hard to make ESF the best it can be. From what we teach in the classroom to how we put our commitment to sustainability into practice every day on campus, ESF has a tradition of excellence,” said ESF President Joanie Mahoney.

The Best 389 Colleges list is comprised based on surveys from 165,000 students, who are asked to rate their colleges on dozens of topics and report on their campus experiences. Only 15% of America’s 2,700 four-year colleges and universities are included in the list

According to The Princeton Review, students describe ESF as “fostering a community that uses the knowledge it gains through schooling to make real changes to our world” and “one of the most accepting groups of students.” When asked about campus life, students describe ESF as having an active student body, with “students participating in several clubs and holding several leadership positions at a time.”

The Green Matters ranking is based on students’ answers to survey questions, including how they rate administration and student support for environmental awareness and conservation efforts. One new sustainability initiative launched at ESF in spring 2023 was the use of reusable food containers as the default to-go order option at the Trailhead Café to help reduce the College’s waste and meet its goals.

The Best Northeast list is compiled based on institutions deemed academically outstanding.
