Mighty Oak Monday: Dr. Namjoo Heo

Defending a dissertation is cause for celebration in every case—but some cases stand out as particularly noteworthy.

Dr. Namjoo Heo, '21, completed his doctorate in environmental biology this fall after three years of studying hart's tongue ferns. Hart's tongue is an emblematic plant that has received considerable attention from fern conservationists worldwide. Many of those studying these ferns are at ESF.

Heo's research focused on the underlying causes of the fern's global distribution, its uneven rarity, and unique ecology. As a result of his work, fern conversationalists are closer to understanding the hart's tongue's evolution and taxonomy.

Heo is currently working as a post-doc associate at ESF, studying the genetic impact of silvicultural practices and the dynamics of invasive species using genome sequencing strategies. He's grown as an advocate for conservationism and is excited to learn more about the world's diverse species of plants.

Thank you to Dr. Heo for the research you to help improve the world. Well done!
