Dr. Karin E. Limburg
We are very pleased to announce that during the Spotlight on Research Awards Ceremony, held Tuesday, April 13, 2010, Dr. Karin Limburg, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Forest Biology, was named the College's Exemplary Researcher for 2010. This College-level award recognizes a successful, currently active researcher with exemplary research activity, publication record and graduate/undergraduate student research program.
- Dr. Limburg has built a thriving research program since arriving at ESF in 1999 from the University of Stockholm, Sweden, where she was a Research Assistant Professor. She is broadly educated (Vassar College, A.B. in Biology and Ecology/Conservation (double major); University of Florida at Gainesville, M.S. in Systems Ecology; Cornell University, Ph.D in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology). Examples of her research program include the decline of fish in the Atlantic; near-shore fish ecology; river herring otolith geochemical markers; and enhancing the quality of urban life. Her research continues to evolve towards increasingly significant issues and emphasizes the importance of quantifying ecosystem services and valuation.
- Dr. Limburg is working with physicists from Cornell and Lund University in Sweden to use a new generation of x-ray detectors for stronger micro-analytic methods. She has also been recruited to join a team of outstanding scientists working on Grand Canyon issues.
- Dr. Limburg travels internationally to participate in workshops and to give invited presentations. She sponsors many International Visiting Scientists to ESF, and her collaboration with Chinese scientists has built a strong foundation to collaborate with the Chinese Society for Ecological Economics.
- Dr. Limburg's work on the decline of fish was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society and in Bioscience. Last year she published five substantive papers in peer-reviewed journals and submitted another four.
- Dr. Limburg provides substantial leadership to the Society of Ecological Economics. She is currently on the board of the U.S. Society for Ecological Economics and was this group's president. She is the founding co-editor of Ecological Economics Reviews.
- Dr. Limburg teaches important courses in EFB and brings her impressive research into these courses, as well as her tremendous rigor, quantitative skills, logic and passion.
This award, which is made annually, contributes to the support of an RA or TA in the appropriate Department, is designed to attract an excellent graduate student to be mentored by the Exemplary Researcher, and comes with a $5,000 research account. Dr. Limburg will also present a campus-wide research seminar in the fall highlighting her work.
Congratulations to Dr. Karin Limburg on this well-deserved honor!
