SUNY ESF
Institute for Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing

Mission

The mission of the Institute for Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing is to reduce the human environmental footprint by promoting the development of sustainable practices that convert abundant biomass feedstocks into valuable commodities. This will be accomplished through a global collaboration of researchers sharing their insights and best practices in the effective and efficient transformation of biomass into value-added materials that replace those generated from non-renewable sources.

Goals

The goals of this institute are to promote and advance basic and applied research in the areas of:

  • Biorefinery Strategies.
  • Lost-cost ionization radiation.
  • Solar-based photoelectrodes.
  • Development of solar-based photoelectrodes for conversions and synthesis.
  • Sustainable and Eco-manufacturing.

Our Impacts

The achievements of ISMM will have impacts by:

  • Creating practical solutions to long-standing technology problems with translational effects on a broad array of industries.
  • Establishing new educational programs in sustainable process development with national and international significance.
  • Advancing fundamental understanding of complex structure and characteristics of biomass.
  • Dissemination of knowledge (publications and presentations) and expertise (patents and licenses) with promising potential for technology transfer and start-ups.
