SUNY ESF Summer Science Week at the MOST

Educating Rising 9th Graders on Sustainability & Climate Change

SYRACUSE, NY- July 26, 2023 - Learning about sustainability and developing ways to combat climate change locally is at the heart of a week-long camp for rising ninth graders in Onondaga County.

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) and The Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) have again joined forces for SUNY ESF Summer Science Week from Monday, July 24 to Friday, July 28.

“ESF is excited to again partner with the MOST for SUNY ESF Summer Science Week. I’m confident that seeing firsthand what’s being done in their community and learning how they can be part of the climate change solution will help develop the next generation of environmental scientists,” said ESF President Joanie Mahoney.

Starting more than a decade ago to highlight the cleanup of Onondaga Lake and the surrounding watershed, Summer Science Week has evolved into the premier opportunity for eighth-grade graduates to get hands-on fieldwork experience and exploration of environmental science concepts, practices, and careers before entering high school.

This year, campers will explore local natural and built sites throughout Syracuse and surrounding areas to explore sustainability, environmental engineering, and other solutions to climate change in their community. The majority of the camp takes place outdoors.

“The MOST is thrilled to be partnering with SUNY ESF once again for Summer Science Week, designed for students entering 9th grade,” said MOST President Lauren Kochian. “This immersive and hands-on summer camp demonstrates the tremendous STEM educational opportunities in Central New York for our students and future workforce. We are grateful to President Mahoney and the faculty and staff at ESF for ensuring this camp remains high quality and at no cost to students and their families.”

SUNY ESF Summer Science Week empowers students through hands-on experiential learning and personal ownership of scientific data. Gathering, analyzing, and reporting personally collected data allows the students to become familiar with scientific language and units of measure, better understand and explain fundamental concepts, and gain a deeper appreciation of nature and their local environment.

The week’s activities include visits to ESF’s hydrology and paper production labs and a sustainability tour of campus, a bioblitz along the Creekwalk, and tours of the OCRRA Amboy Compost Site and other sites throughout Onondaga County to learn about solutions to climate change in their community.

Students will showcase their projects to family and friends Friday, July 28 from 5-6 p.m. on the MOST’s East Lawn.
