Place-centered Learning and Community Engagement for Stewardship and Sustainability

Have you ever been so affected by a place that the experience moves you in some way – emotionally, motivationally, actively? Conversely, are there spaces that feel oppressive and limiting? This brown bag seminar will explore scholarship regarding place attachment, Place-Based Education (PBE), and community engagement, with application to natural resource stewardship and wicked problems in sustainability and community change. We will explore the interface between theory and practice, and will call into question conventional, positivist notions of science education that exclude emotional development and sense of place. Finally, we will discuss ideas for boundary crossing and potential collaborations.

Shari L. Dann is a Visiting Scholar at SUNY ESF Environmental Studies, and an Associate Professor at Michigan State University’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. She serves in the Department of Community Sustainability and MSU Extension, and worked previously in the MSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. Her home place is Central New York and the Finger Lakes Region, with occasional forays into the Adirondacks.
