The New York State Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP) opens doors.

Designed for students in grades 7–12, STEP provides academic support, enrichment, and guidance for those with an interest in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and licensed professions — especially students who could benefit most from additional opportunity and access.

But STEP is more than support. It’s a starting point.

Program Highlights

STEM Field Trips

Visit research labs, conservation sites, and sustainability projects in action.

Workshops and Seminars

Why SUNY ESF?

At the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), learning doesn’t stay in the classroom.

Here, students study forests by walking through them. They explore climate solutions by building them. They ask big questions — and work side-by-side with people finding real answers. Through STEP, ESF invites middle and high school students into this world — offering early access to hands-on learning, mentorship, and the kind of experiences that shape futures.

Eligible students are:

  • New York State residents
  • Currently in grades 7–12
  • Economically disadvantaged and/or motivated to strengthen their skills in STEM

What You'll Experience

Science at ESF goes beyond textbooks.

Through interactive workshops, after-school programs, field experiences, and project-based activities, students explore STEM by doing — from environmental investigations and sustainability challenges to hands-on lab demonstrations and research experiences.

Students may even step inside the BioBus, a mobile science laboratory equipped with professional-grade microscopes and tools that bring real scientific discovery directly to their school.

STEP provides ongoing support designed to help students build confidence and succeed academically.

Middle and high school students can access:

  • Small-group or one-on-one tutoring in science, math, and writing
  • Regents preparation and college essay support
  • In-school classroom assistance from STEP staff
  • Weekly drop-in office hours for advising and academic help

Tutoring and mentorship are often led by ESF students — giving participants relatable role models who are already succeeding in college STEM programs.

STEP helps students begin planning for the future early.

Participants receive individualized guidance on high school course selection, college preparation, financial aid, scholarships, and STEM career pathways. Students also connect with ESF faculty, researchers, graduate students, and industry professionals to explore what careers in science, technology, environmental fields, and licensed professions can look like.

For many students, STEP offers a first glimpse into college life — and the confidence to see themselves there.

Students build leadership and teamwork skills through collaborative projects, mentorship opportunities, and research experiences connected to real-world environmental challenges.

High school participants may also gain access to research placements and potential paid internship opportunities alongside ESF faculty and partner organizations throughout Central New York.
