ESF Men’s, Women’s Soccer Teams Compete at Paul Smiths

The ESF men's and women's soccer teams traveled to Paul Smiths College with a dual purpose: to compete and to give back to the community through community service.

Both teams found themselves in fast-paced games.

"Paul Smiths has shown steady improvement over the last year and has made this a great competitive rivalry," said ESF Coach Dan Ramin.

The Mighty Oaks women were victorious over the Paul Smiths Bobcats, defeating them 7-1 after a game marked by great possession and composure. ESF got on the board in the first five minutes of the game with a top 90 shot (into the top corner of the net) and goal from sophomore Mary Clark. Paul Smiths responded with a volley goal, which ESF answered immediately with a fast break goal by junior Sue Fassler. The Mighty Oaks solidified their victory with five more goals, two by senior Kendra Nash, two by junior Meg Dalton and one by sophomore Meg Rosche, with assists from seniors Jenny Loewenstein and Lauren Bayne. The women will compete next against Daemen College Oct. 30 at Syracuse University.

The ESF men played to a 2-2 tie against the Bobcats after double overtime. Senior Colin Hoffman put ESF on the board with a volley goal early in the game. Paul Smiths tied the game in the second half and then scored another goal, bringing the score to 2-1. Senior Gaelin Walsh scored the tying goal with 10 minutes left in the game, bringing the score to 2-2. The Mighty Oaks fought through double overtime with multiple opportunities to score, but were unable to score the winning goal. The men will also play Daemen College Oct. 30 at SU.

In addition to playing soccer, the Mighty Oaks stayed at the Adirondack Ecological Center (AEC) so they could get in some community service work, which included maintenance work at the AEC and splitting firewood at a nearby farm.
