Mighty Oaks Soccer Teams Lose Against Tough Teams

The Mighty Oaks women lost 2-0 to Elmira College Oct. 9 at Elmira despite several opportunities to score.

The Elmira Soaring Eagles put themselves on the board with a goal early in the first half and shut out the Mighty Oaks for the rest of the game. ESF goalkeeper, Olivia Gagliardi, a freshman, was forced out of the game after an injury and nine saves, leaving junior Wendy Getman to finish the game. Getman registered four saves, but Elmira scored a second goal late in the game and sent the Mighty Oaks home with a loss. Junior Meg Dalton and senior Jenny Loewenstien led ESF through the game with strong play on the field.

The ESF men also faced defeat, losing 4-0 to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics powerhouse Roberts Wesleyan College Oct. 13 in Rochester. The Mighty Oaks held Roberts Wesleyan to one goal at halftime with the help of solid defensive play by junior Steven Tyrrell. The ESF men fired back in the second half with aggressive field play, which led to some scoring opportunities, including a strong effort by senior Gailen Walsh, who almost put the Mighty Oaks on the board. Roberts Wesleyan quashed the chance of an ESF win with three goals late in the second half.

It was "a great effort against a full scholarship program," Coach Dan Ramin said.

The Mighty Oaks men will compete next against Paul Smith's College at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 in Paul Smiths.

In the most recent game, the Mighty Oaks women lost 2-0 to SUNY-IT Oct. 17 at Onondaga Community College. SUNY-IT's well-organized team shut out the ESF women with goals in the opening and closing minutes of the second half. Juniors Sue Fassler and Meg Dalton and senior Kendra Nash led the Mighty Oaks but were unable to score.

The ESF women will play next against Paul Smith's College at 4 p.m. Oct. 22 in Paul Smiths.
