Men's Soccer Team Opens with Loss at Broome

The Mighty Oaks kicked off ESF's first season of official intercollegiate athletics when the men's soccer team played Broome Community College Aug. 29 in a grueling away game.

The ESF men suffered a 3-to-1 loss after battling the Broome Hornets in searing temperatures that hovered around 90 degrees.

The Hornets scored first but the Mighty Oaks came back strong as freshman Ross Volpe evened the score in the first half with a well-placed goal. The Mighty Oaks lost their footing after a controversial penalty kick was called early in the second half of the game. Despite the ESF team's efforts, the final blow came from a third goal scored by the Hornets late in the game.

Junior Andrew Sorci and freshman Kyle Siegel made impressive contributions in the game. The Mighty Oaks will compete at Deamen College in Amherst in the Labor Day Tournament next weekend.

The ESF women's soccer team will start its season at the Labor Day Tournament, lead by senior Kendra Nash and junior Meaghan Dalton.

The ESF men's golf team will have its first match at the Utica Invitational Sept. 4 at Hidden Valley Country Club.

Mighty Oaks men's and women's cross country will compete in their first meet this season at the SU Invitational at Jamesville Beach Sept. 11.
