Runners Compete in Hamilton Invitational
The ESF men's and women's cross-country teams traveled to Clinton, N.Y., Oct. 8 for the Hamilton Invitational, which attracts some of the most competitive teams in the area as well as runners from outside the region.
The men's team placed fifth overall (129 points) in a field of 15 teams. The women finished eighth in a tough 11-team field.
Despite brilliant sunshine, the course was wet and muddy from the rain earlier in the week. The footing was sloppy for the runners, who were, at times, ankle-deep in mud on the course that was part cornfield, part golf course.
The Mighty Oaks men were narrowly edged out of fourth, finishing just 2 points behind the talented team from Roberts Wesleyan (127 points).
The men's team winner was SUNY New Paltz with 65 points, followed by Hamilton with 68 points. In third was the Royal Military Academy of Canada from Kingston, Ontario, with 110 points.
The Mighty Oaks men beat 10 other colleges including Ithaca College and Nazareth College, teams the ESF squad had not beaten in its three-year history.
"This young team is coming together very nicely and we are now being recognized as an emerging, powerful team that needs to be taken seriously," said Coach John View. "We are looking forward to our trip to Cornell Oct. 21 and then our challenge of competing at the USCAA national championship race in Lake Placid against 34 schools from across the U.S."
Scoring for the ESF men were Brian Busby (6th), Timmy Callahan (12th), Ethan Washburn (32nd), Matt DeLuca (37th), Collin Bartholomew (44th), Andrew Gritzmacher (46th) and Jacob Wolfgong (59th).
Other contributors to this fine performance were: James McKenna (66th), Matt Glaub (80th), Nathan Sleight (92nd), Max Woelk (95th), Matt Allen (102nd), Cody Wilkes (104th) and Joe Gerchman (110th).
There were 115 runners in the men's race.
The team will compete Oct. 21 in the Reif Memorial Run at Cornell University.
Ithaca College (29 points) won the women's race, followed by Roberts Wesleyan (55 points) and SUNY New Paltz (70 points).
The ESF women's team was led by Cambria Ziemer (36th). Second for the Mighty Oaks was Danielle Zgardzinski (37th) followed by Erica Grohol (39th), Elizabeth Bourguet (49th), Emily Martin (52nd), Bridget Bromm (57th), Kaitlin Larson (62st), Aileen Gray and Charlotte Evanofski (63rd), Kelly McKenna (64th), Alice Gallagher (65th) and Kristin Pasquino (67th).
The women's race included 141 competitors.
The Mighty Oaks women will compete Oct. 15 in the Cross Country Only Colleges meet at Seneca Lake State Park.
