Weekend Sports Wrap Up

ESF Mighty Oaks athletes scored victories in soccer the weekend of Sept. 24 and 25 as the cross-country runners finished strong against tough competition and an ESF golfer finished first in a competition for women.

Here's a roundup of the weekend's Mighty Oaks athletic action:

The women's soccer team cruised to a 10-0 victory over Yeshiva University in New York City Sunday. Bridget Cuddihy led the offense with three goals. The game marked Cuddihy's third hat trick of the season.

Kelsey Taylor had two goals and the rest of the Mighty Oaks' goals were scored by Allysa Johnson, Sue Fassler, Brooke Harris, Kaley Donovan and Meaghan Dalton.

Goalkeepers Ani Zipkin and Rachele Brown combined for the shutout.

The momentum carried over to the men's game with a high-energy 4-0 victory over Cooper Union.

Goals were scored by Dillon Buchberg, Ross Volpe, Patrick Alcott and Dan Arseneau. Goalkeepers Mike Walczyk and Eamon Case both contributed to the win.

The ESF soccer teams began their visit to the New York City area with a trip to Red Bull Arena to watch the New York Red Bulls take on the Portland Timbers. The Red Bulls played to a 2-0 victory, keeping alive their hopes of a wildcard playoff berth in the Major League Soccer playoffs.

Both the men's and women's cross-country teams finished in the middle of the pack in their respective meets

The men finished fourth Sept. 24 in the 6-kilometer Jack Daniels Race hosted by powerhouse SUNY Cortland. Eight teams began the race, with six of the teams posting official finishes.

Brian Busby led with an eighth-place finish. He was followed by Timmy Callahan, 22nd; Jacob Wolfgong, 41st; Ethan Washburn, 43rd; Matt DeLuca 49th; Collin Bartholomew, 52nd; Andrew Gritzmacher 61st; James McKenna, 75th; Nick Grieco, 80th; Zach Powers, 84th; Nathan Sleight, 86th; Mike Miles, 87th; Owen Hunter, 88th; Maxwell Woelk, 89th; Matt Allen, 90th; Cody Wilkes, 92nd; Sean Kernan, 94th; Dan Hohl, 95th; and Joe Gerchman, 96th.

The women's cross-country team competed the following day and finished in the middle of the pack at the Lemoyne College Invitational.

Cambria Ziemer placed first for the Oaks in 12th place overall. She was followed by Danielle Kaveney, 13th; Danielle Zgardzinski, 15th; Bridget Bromm, 19th; and Emily Martin, 20th, to round out the scoring five. Also placing were Mikayla Bittner, 23rd; Elizabeth Bourguet, 24th; Charlotte Evanofski 27th; Kaitlin Larson, 28th; Kristin Pasquino, 29th; Alice Gallagher 31st; Aileen Gray, 32nd; and Kelly McKenna, 33rd.

In golf, team member Colleen Groneman finished first Sunday in the women's competition that was part of the OCC Invitational at the Links at Sunset Ridge. Groneman earned the honors by shooting a 43 over nine holes.

The ESF men's team finished third in the tournament. Among the Mighty Oaks, the low round of 80 was scored by Ryan DiRado. Other strong rounds were turned in by Matt Dennis and T.J. Rimmer, who both shot 82, and Bob Mastro with an 84.
