Mighty Oaks Sports Weekend Recap

It was another busy weekend of ESF athletics as all varsity sports teams were in action to start October.

On the soccer pitch, the men's team took on HVIAC foe Culinary Institute Oct. 2 and came away with a 5-0 win over the Steels. The Mighty Oaks had a huge first half, scoring four goals and easily putting the game out of reach for Culinary Institute. Scoring goals for ESF were sophomore Geoff Golick (23rd minute), junior Zack Reda (25th minute), junior Owen Hennigan (33rd minute, assisted by Chris Peretti), junior Joe Marino (38th minute, assisted by Hennigan) and Jorge Guarin (65th minute). The men were back on the field the following day in a non-conference match against their crosstown rivals. the Bobcats of Bryant and Stratton-Syracuse. The Bobcats are ranked eighth nationally by the USCAA. The Bobcats lived up to their ranking with a 2-0 win over ESF. Despite allowing two goals in the first half, the Mighty Oaks fought hard against a talented Bobcats squad. Sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Schiavone had seven saves for ESF. The men's soccer team record is now 5-5 overall, 4-1 in HVIAC play. The men will play again against Paul Smith's College in the annual Barkeater Cup Oct. 9.

The women's soccer team had one game over the weekend, a 2-0 win over the Bobcats of Bryant and Stratton-Syracuse. ESF's two goals came in the second half and were scored by junior midfielder Sarah Lundy (60th minute, assisted by Bryony Striffler) with her first goal of the season and Heather Carl (70th minute, assisted by Jessie Smith). It was Carl's seventh goal of the season. With the win, the women's team improves to 6-1 overall and is now ranked second nationally by the USCAA. The women will play Broome Community College Oct. 7.

The Mighty Oaks men's and women's cross-country teams traveled to Letchworth State Park Satuday to participate in the prestigious Geneseo Invitational. The invitational featured 37 competitive schools from all over the Northeast and Canada. The men's team finished 27th in the race, which featured 500 runner. Despite the lower-than-average finish for the men's team, all seven runners who scored for ESF ran personal bests on the 8k course, improving on their previous times by up to a minute. Scoring for ESF was senior Stephen Slonosky (111th - 26:48), senior Christian Freeman (119th - 26:53), junior Reed Scott (134th - 27:05), senior Peter Leduc (145th - 27:14) and sophomore Dana Carris (158th - 27:20). The women's team also competed well, finishing 24th overall. Finishing in the top 50 out of 450 runners was freshman Marissa Lathrop (43rd - 22:58). Other finishers included Cara Keogh (134th - 24:26), junior Courtney Pitman (159th - 24:54), junior Elle Palmer (177th - 25:38) and sophomore Camila Ferguson-Sierra (180th - 25:49). Both teams will focus its attention and begin training for the HVIAC Championships to be held in Milton, N.Y.. Oct. 18.

The men's golf team was back in action, looking to build off its success from the previous weekend. A difficult course and windy conditions affected the team's play and ESF finished last at the two-day NCCGA Northeast Regional tournament at Timber Banks Golf Club in Baldwinsville, N.Y. Senior Brian Walsh was ESF's top individual finisher, placing in a tie for sixth place. Walsh finished with a combined score of 164 (84, 80). Senior Alex Brown finished 13th with combined score of 170 (80, 90). The team finishes its 2015 season at the USCAA National Championship Oct. 11-13 at the Penn State Blue Course.

The ESF Woodsmen's team found success this weekend at the Finger Lakes Community College Logging Sports Competition Saturday. The team's endurance and skill were put to the test as the meet lasted more than 10 hours. The results were satisfying as the women's team placed first overall, the men fourth and the Jack-and-Jill team placed third. Eight other schools also participated in the competition. The woodsmen team will be back in action at Paul Smith's College Oct. 17.
