Mighty Oaks Weekend Recap

It was a busy weekend for Mighty Oaks athletics as several teams were in action.

The men's and women's cross-country teams ran Sept. 30 at the 37th Annual Mike Woods Invitational at SUNY Geneseo. The Mike Woods Invitational is one of the most competitive races the team will compete in this season. It featured more than 200 runners from 18 schools in both the men's and women's races.

In the women's race, junior Marissa Lathrop was the top finisher for ESF, placing 40th overall with a time of 23:42. Freshman Erin Cocca finished 56th overall (24:00). Cocca finished in the top 20 among freshman runners. Cocca's time was the second fastest time ever for an ESF freshman on a 6k course. The Mighty Oaks placed 10th out of 15 schools. The host Geneseo Knghts finished first.

The men's team finished 12th out of 18 schools. Geneseo finished first in the men's race. Freshman Mark McClenahan put in another strong performance for ESF, placing first for the Mighty Oaks and 67th overall out of 238 runners and time of 26:49. His time smashes the previous school record by six seconds for a freshman on an 8k course. Fellow freshman Tom Keenan finished 119th overall (27:47) followed by Anders Proft (138th - 28:07).

The next race for both team's is Oct. 7 at Hamilton College.

On the golf course, senior Sean Barron had another brilliant weekend, placing second overall at the NCCGA (National Collegiate Club Golf Association) Northeast Regional tournament at Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course in Lewiston, New York. Barron shot 77 the first day and 75 the next day for a total score of 152, eight over par. His score helped ESF finish in third place overall out of six teams. Sophomore Colin Sabitus finished 18th 170 (91, 79) including improving his first day score by 12 strokes.

The golf team travels to State College, Pennsylvania, Oct. 8-10 for the USCAA National Championships.

The Mighty Oaks soccer teams traveled up to Paul Smith's College for the Annual Mark A. "Max" Calderone Memorial Barkeaters Cup. Both teams came away with convincing wins over the Bobcats — the men 10-0, the women 7-0.

In the men's game, the Mighty Oaks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, notching a quick goal by freshman Luke Day off a set play on the opening kick. In the ensuing play, sophomore Joseph Kulikowski stole a pass off Paul Smith's first possession, setting up a corner kick. Kulikowski knocked in a goal off the corner kick by sophomore Mickael Myagkota. Less than two minutes into the game, ESF found itself up 2-0. The Mighty Oaks went on to score five more goals in the first half and three in the second half to come away with a 10-0 win. Senior Geoff Golick scored a hat trick while Kulikowski score two goals and assisted on three others.

In the women's game, senior Lauren Archer scored a hat trick, her second of the season in a 7-0 win over the Bobcats.

The men's team improves to 5-3 overall while the women are 5-1. The Barkeaters Cups stay in Syracuse for another year. Both teams face off against Onondaga Community College in the annual King and Queen of the Hill games Oct. 5.

The Mighty Oaks Bass Fishing team traveled to Lake Champlain for the New York State Bass Fishing Collegiate Cup. Two ESF anglers, Ray Bentz and Andy Sinchuk, placed second in the tournament.
