ESF Kicks Off International Education Week
A full slate of campus events is planned to celebrate International Education Week (IEW) Nov. 5 through 9. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of an effort to promote programs that prepare students for a global environment and attract future leaders to study, learn and exchange experiences.
"It's a great time for everyone to join in the celebrations of our international community on campus and in the support and exploration of our international reach as a campus," said Thomas Carter, assistant director of international education at ESF.
Highlights of the week include the ESF Cultural Showcase, 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Gateway Center. This talent-show-like event offers cultural presentations from students; their work ranges from musical acts to martial arts. International students will also be at tables presenting information about their countries and providing information, feedback and fun activities/food from their home countries. Free international food will be provided for this annual celebration and guests are encouraged to stop by for as long as they can.
There will also be a panel of study abroad and international students for Around the World: Student Studies of Global Engagement, 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Nov. 8 in 408 Baker Laboratory. This panel is geared toward ESF staff and faculty, who are invited to learn about the lasting impacts of international experiences on ESF students (the good, the bad, and the ugly) and how our campus can continue to make improvements in this area.
"We're excited to hear from four student panelists with stories ranging from cultural exchange in Germany, explorations in research in Mongolia, journeys to ESF from Panama, and the unique experience of one of our new BUCT students," said Carter. Refreshments will be provided, and there will be a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Questions from the audience are encouraged.
The Trailhead Cafe will also participate in IEW by offering an international menu throughout the week. To access the menu, visit the IEW website.
