Mighty Oaks Sports Weekend Recap (Week of Oct. 1)

The ESF women's cross-country team finished third overall among 11 teams at the Houghton Highlander Invitational.

Senior Marissa Lathrop added a first-place finish to her long list of accomplishments as an ESF athlete - she became the first woman in ESF cross-country history to win an individual title. Lathrop ran a 24:30 in the 6K course, placing ahead of several SUNY Geneseo runners who had finished ahead of Lathrop the previous weekend at the Geneseo Invitational. Sophomores Julie Romano (6th - 25:15) and Eric Cocca (12th - 25:45) also finished in the top 15. There were 108 runners in the race.

The men's cross-country team finished fourth among 10 teams. Senior Ethan Appelgren finished first for ESF, 18th overall with a time of 28:14 in the 8K race. Sophomore Mark McClenahan finished 36th overall with a time of 29:03. Sophomore Howard Haines placed 49th overall with a time of 29:39. The race featured 140 runners.

Both teams have the next weekend off and will race again Oct. 20 at the Hamilton Short Course Invitational.

It was an up-and-down weekend on the soccer field for the Mighty Oaks. The women's team ended its weekend doubleheader on a high note, defeating No. 1-ranked SUNY Delhi, 1-0, in overtime. The Broncos came in with a 9-0 record, averaging more than three goals per game. The Mighty Oaks defense clamped down on the Broncos throughout the game. After a grinding 90 minutes of action, junior Marissa Hughes drew a penalty in the Broncos' box midway through the overtime period. Hughes converted the penalty kick, giving ESF a 1-0 win.

"I'm very proud of the women not only for the outcome of the game, but more importantly, for how they've played. All season long, we have been pushing to fully understand the potential this team has when all the pieces are put together and today was the first time we had all of those pieces. It was a full team effort today" said Head Coach Adam Scalisi.

The women were defeated by Alfred State the previous night 3-0. The team's record now stands at 4-4 overall. The squad travels to Brooklyn, New York, Oct. 14, to face HVIAC opponent Pratt Institute.

The men's soccer team dropped both games in the weekend doubleheader. ESF lost to Alfred State, 2-0. In a game that featured a weather delay and rough field conditions, the Mighty Oaks outshot the Pioneers 7-3 but were unable to find the back of the net.

The following day, the Mighty Oaks fell in a shootout vs SUNY Delhi. The Broncos got on the board one minute into the match. They added to the lead with two additional goals. ESF scored on a PK at the 41st minute to go into half time down 3-1. Another ESF goal at the 53rd minute brought the Mighty Oaks within one goal, 3-2. The Broncos would answer with a goal at the 55th-minute, pushing the lead to 4-2. ESF scored at the 86th-minute but it was not enough. The Broncos won 4-3. Scoring for ESF were graduate student Geoff Golick, sophomore Liam Byrne and freshman Own Henckler.

The men's team falls to 4-5 overall. The team faces Bryant and Stratton in Syracuse Oct. 9.
