Mighty Oaks Sports Weekend Recap (Week of Sept. 10)
Men's soccer: The Mighty Oaks men's soccer team went 2-0 on its New York City road trip. The team, coming off a tough 1-0 loss vs Onondaga Community College, faced Vaughn College in its first Hudson Valley intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) game of the season. The first half saw no goals. Freshman Jack Phillips scored at the 56th minute in the second half to give ESF a 1-0 lead and the win. Sophomore goalkeeper Carmine Tronolone made nine saves in the shutout win. The following day, the Mighty Oaks played The King's College in another HVIAC conference match. The Lions came into the match with a unblemished 4-0 record. Senior forward George Beinetti got ESF on the board early with a rebound goal at the 13th minute. Freshman Jack Phillips followed up with another goal at the 39th minute to give ESF a 2-0 lead at the half. ESF scored two more goals in the second half (Copper Weinman, 72nd minute and Harrison Cox, 88th minute) to come away with a 4-0 win. Tronolone made eight saves in the game, and had a total of 17 in two shutouts.
With the win, ESF improves to 3-1 overall, 2-0 in HVIAC conference play. The men face Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Sept. 21.
The women's soccer team also topped The King's College, 3-0, in its first HVIAC conference game of the season. After a scoreless first half, ESF notched three goals in the second half. Junior Marissa Pompeii scored first at the 47th minute. Next came a blast from outside the box by Rachael Foote, scoring her first collegiate goal, at the 63rd-minute. Senior Rachel Truska scored for ESF at the 80th-minute and ESF went on to win 3-0.
Earlier in the week, the women's squad fell to Cazenovia College, 5-1. Wildcat senior forward Michaela Breeze scored a hat-trick against ESF. With the win at King's, the Mighty Oaks improve to 2-1 overall. Their next match is Sept. 21 vs a conference rival, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
The Mighty Oaks cross country traveled to the University of Rochester for the Yellowjacket Invitational., which featured some of the top Division III cross-country programs in the Northeast.
The women's squad finished sixth overall, improving from last year's ninth-place finish and placing ahead of several other competitive SUNY schools, including Buffalo State, Cortland, Fredonia and Oswego. Sophomore Julie Romano was the top finisher for the Mighty Oaks, finishing 30th overall with a time of 24:45 in the 5K race. This was Romano's first, first-place team finish for ESF. Senior Marissa Lathrop placed 40th overall with a time of 25:08. Sophomore Erin Cocca finished in 43rd place with a time of 25:15. The race featured 15 schools and 212 runners.
In the men's 8K race, Mark McClenahan's 69th-place finish helped ESF to a tenth-place overall finish. McClenahan's time was 28:43. Senior Ethan Appelgren placed 73rd overall with a time of 28:51 while senior Ben Wasserman finished 104 out 215 runners.
The Mighty Oaks will be back in action Sept. 29 at the SUNY Geneseo "Mike Woods" Invitational.
The Mighty Oaks men's golf team held its Player's Invitational at the Links at Erie Village. The ESF Players Championship was created to honor the continued growth and strengthening of the ESF squad and to move the team forward and celebrate a love for the game of golf.
Senior Sean Barron scored a 76, fives strokes over par for the 18-hole course. Senior Kory Whittum finished second with an overall score of 82 while Andrew Crossway finished third with an overall score of 83. The team will travel to Canton, New York, Sept. 21 for the Canton Invitational at Partridge Run Golf and Country Club.
