Mighty Oaks Sports Weekend Recap (Week of Aug. 27)

The 2018 Mighty Oaks falls sports season started on a high note as the men's cross-country team won the Frank Dillon Memorial Invitational at Le Moyne College and the men's soccer team picked up a 4-1 win over Cazenovia College, the team's first win against the Wildcats since 2013.

Two members of the Le Moyne Dolphins' team finished in the first and second spots but the rest was all ESF as seven Mighty Oaks were among the top 10. Sophomore Mark McClenahan finished third overall with a time of 22:12 on the four-mile course. Sixty-seven runners from four schools participated in the race.

The women's team finished second overall with a score of 32 while Le Moyne College came in first, edging the Mighty Oaks by only three points. Senior Marissa Lathrop placed third overall for ESF with a time of 16:47. Lathrop and three other Mighty Oaks runners finished in the top 10. Fifty-five runners from five schools ran in the race.

The cross-country teams will hit the course again Sept. 15 at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational.

On the soccer pitch, the men's soccer team opened the 2018 season with a 4-1 win over local rival Cazenovia College. Adam Scalisi couldn't have asked for a better start in his first collegiate game as head coach with the Mighty Oaks - junior Cooper Weinman put ESF up 1-nil only a minute into the game. The Mighty Oaks added to the lead with goals by sophomore Daniel Pelletier (20th minute) and freshman Jack Phillips (24th minute) to put ESF up 3-0. The Wildcats responded with a goal off a penalty kick at the 27th minute. ESF junior forward Luke Day added to the score with a goal at the 35th minute, ending the action-packed first half with a 4-1 lead for ESF.

The Mighty Oaks played conservatively in the second half, keeping the Wildcats from scoring again and maintaining their three-goal lead to win the game 4-1.

ESF is 1-0 overall while Cazenovia is 0-1. The Mighty Oaks men's and women's soccer teams face cross-town rival Onondaga Community College Sept. 7 in the annual King and Queen of the Hill Cup.
