Mighty Oaks Weekend Recap
ESF hosted the Inaugural Mighty Oaks Invitational at the new Tully Field. The invitational featured SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Cortland and St. John Fisher College.
In the men's 5K race, freshman Matt Tripp came in first overall with a time of 16:11, his second top individual finish this season. Junior Mark McClenahan placed fifth overall while freshman Simon Seidl finished seventh. ESF finished second overall behind St. John Fisher.
The women's team also finished second overall led by senior Erin Cocca's fifth-place finish (20:50). Teammates Cassidy Engleson and Tabby Wechter placed sixth and seventh overall. St. John's Fisher freshman Riley Corey finished first overall with a time of 19:51.
The cross-country teams race again Oct. 27 at the HVIAC league meet.
A few hours after the Mighty Oaks Invitational, the men's soccer team took to the Tully Field pitch to face off against conference rival Vaughn College. The Mighty Oaks came away with a hard-fought 3-2 overtime win against the Warriors.
Freshman Aaron Flint got the Mighty Oaks on the board early, notching in a goal at the 34-minute mark of the first half. This was Flint's first career goal. ESF led 1-0 at half time. Vaughn College equalized the score with a goal at the 74-minute mark of the second half. ESF went ahead 2-1 with a goal by junior Ian Foote at the 85th minute. Vaughn College would respond immediately tying up the game with a goal one minute later to send the game into overtime. Sophomore Jack Phillips capitalized on a penalty kick goal one minute into sudden death overtime to give ESF the 3-2 win.
With the win, ESF improves to 5-3-2 overall and secures a spot in the HVIAC conference tournament Oct. 26-27.
The woodsmen's team also hosted its annual home meet at Tully Field. Both the men's and women's team swept all the competition placing first in each category. A replay of the woodsmen competition will be available on ESF TV.
The men's golf season came to a close with a third-place finish at the National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA) northeast regional tournament held at Shenandoah Course in Verona, NY. Senior Colin Sabitus finished in second place overall with a two day total score of 158 (81, 77). Sophomore Andrew Crossway and junior Derrick Rackie finished 16th and 17th overall with combined scores of 171 (87,84) and 172 (87, 85). Over 50 golfers and six schools participated in the tournament.
