Oakie Falls in Mascot Madness Finals
ESF's Oakie the Acorn lost SUNY’s Mascot Madness in what can best be described as a match for the ages as the acorn fell to Stony Brook University’s Wolfie 25,460 to 24,156.
The annual competition pits SUNY mascots against each other in an online voting competition to determine the fan favorite. Similar to the NCAA March Madness tournament, voting takes place in five rounds.
With a student enrollment more than 10 times smaller than Stony Brook’s, ESF looked to the Syracuse community and beyond to keep the voting close. The College, dedicated to the study of the environment, received support from the Syracuse and Central New York communities and beyond.
To get to the Championship Round, Oakie made fast work of mascots from the University of Buffalo, SUNY Canton, and Nassau Community College in early rounds, and pulled out a close match against Binghamton University in the Final Four.
This marked the second time Oakie faced Wolfie, having lost to the seawolf in 2022. Oakie won the Mascot Madness crown against SUNY Geneseo’s Victor E. Knight in 2017.
Congratulations to Wolfie and Stony Brook, and Oakie will see you next year!
