Meet the Faculty - Jean Yang

Professor Jean Yang shares how she first discovered SUNY ESF through her fascination with the campus design of legendary landscape architect Dan Kiley — and how that spark grew into a deep appreciation for ESF’s unique, ecology-driven approach to landscape architecture. She explains what sets ESF apart from design and architecture schools: a focus not just on aesthetics, but on performance, systems thinking, and how people truly experience and interact with the land. Jean’s teaching philosophy encourages students to see landscape architecture as a bridge between culture, ecology, and community — a discipline that helps us rethink how humans connect to the Earth.

She also talks about how she brings creativity and individuality into her classes, helping students blend personal passions — whether in sports, art, or science — into their design thinking. At ESF, she finds inspiration in the school’s collaborative environment, where biologists, environmental scientists, and designers work side-by-side to reimagine what’s possible.
